Nina Romano has written a historical thriller full of sensuous detail. Love, danger, and mystery follow Anya, a former ballerina, through 1950’s Russia, during the constraints and brutalities of the Soviet regime. Anya is a jobless, single mother of a child with special needs. She finds herself in the middle of two murder investigations, with little recourse when the violence turns toward her. She needs to keep her wits and all of her senses about her to keep herself and her child safe. Mixing beauty and devastation, Romano vividly draws the dangers surrounding Anya and her loved ones. Her characters are tough and charming and full of determination to survive. Romano’s lyrical writing and descriptions drew me in from the beginning, making Dark Eyes a gripping, suspenseful read that was difficult to put down. I highly recommend it!
